I noticed that when I click on a page from the left nav pane, the page has a grey border placed around it. When I click on it again, the border becomes a pink-purple color.

What is the difference in terms of functionality between the first click grey and the second click pink-purple?

It’s the focus indicator. For example CMD-D will duplicate an element on the page, but when it’s pink it will duplicate the page itself.
