It’s nothing dramatic, but I’m just wondering why some Sparkle files have a round icon and some a file icon like a document with the sparkle logo in it.

Sounds like some issue on your Mac. Finder icons are managed by system processes, and Sparkle documents should only ever have the document with the Sparkle logo.
